FAQs
Stained Glass Window is a project that requires students to graph linear equations in order to create a colorful (yet mathematical) display window. Each student selects and graphs at least twelve linear equations from the equation bank to create their own unique stained glass window.
What is the linear equation for stained glass? ›
Stained Glass Window with Linear Equations y=mx+b
Students must be able to identify the y-intercept and slope from a given equation in order to graph accurately. Students need to understand the concept of rise over run, so that they can differentiate between positive and negative slope.
How are individual pieces of glass in a stained glass construction held together? ›
Pieces of glass are held together with narrow strips of lead to form a panel. These strips are referred to as “lead came.” Lead is used because it is flexible and provides the adaptability needed for fitting around the various shapes of the glass pieces.
What material was most commonly used to enclose the individual pieces of glass in a stained glass window? ›
The coloured glass is crafted into stained glass windows in which small pieces of glass are arranged to form patterns or pictures, held together (traditionally) by strips of lead, called cames or calms, and supported by a rigid frame.
How do you solve linear equations using graphs? ›
TO SOLVE A SYSTEM OF LINEAR EQUATIONS BY GRAPHING.
- Graph the first equation.
- Graph the second equation on the same rectangular coordinate system.
- Determine whether the lines intersect, are parallel, or are the same line.
- Identify the solution to the system. If the lines intersect, identify the point of intersection.
What method did you use in graphing the linear equation? ›
There are three basic methods of graphing linear functions. The first is by plotting points and then drawing a line through the points. The second is by using the y-intercept and slope. The third is applying transformations to the identity function f(x)=x f ( x ) = x .
What is the correct formula in making stained glass? ›
Which of the following is the correct formula in making stained glass? sand + cobalt oxide + lime + heat.
How do you find the linear equation? ›
The slope-intercept form of a linear equation is y = mx + b. In the equation, x and y are the variables. The numbers m and b give the slope of the line (m) and the value of y when x is 0 (b). The value of y when x is 0 is called the y-intercept because (0,y) is the point at which the line crosses the y-axis.
What is the linear equation example? ›
A linear equation can have more than one variable. If the linear equation has two variables, then it is called linear equations in two variables and so on. Some of the examples of linear equations are 2x – 3 = 0, 2y = 8, m + 1 = 0, x/2 = 3, x + y = 2, 3x – y + z = 3.
Is copper foil or lead came stronger? ›
Which is best for what? Although copper foil is structurally stronger, lead came is used for external windows as it's made waterproof by the cementing process. I would make larger windows with lead as they're quicker to make. It's estimated that it takes about one third less time than foil.
Calmes or Cames
Cast strips of lead, H-shaped in section and cut to the requisite length, were used to hold glass pieces together in the assembly of a stained glass panel. The centre of the lead is called the heart, while the overlapping areas that cover the glass's edges are called the flange or leaf.
What connects stained glass? ›
Your trusty roll of copper tape will help bond the two together. Copper foil is fancy tape that is sticky on one side and copper faced on the other side. You will very carefully wrap the edges of each glass piece in tape. Copper tape comes in different sizes and sticky side colors (black, silver, and copper).
What is a person who makes stained glass called? ›
Stained-glass glaziers restore and install old stained-glass windows. They possess artistic qualities and technical know-how for working with lead and coloured glass.
What do the colors of stained glass mean? ›
The Meaning Of Stained Glass Colors On Stained Glass
Green: Is the color of grass and nature and therefore represents growth and rebirth, life over death. Violet: A bold color symbolizing love, truth, passion, and suffering. White: Is a representation of chastity, innocence, and purity is often associated with God.
Is stained glass transparent or translucent? ›
The two main categories are: Opalescent glass (also commonly referred to as Opals) which are more opaque meaning you can't see directly through them.. Cathedral glass is transparent. They can still have beautiful and intense colours, but you can see right through them.
Which graph shows a linear equation? ›
A linear equation is an equation with two variables whose graph is a line.
What is the process of graphing a linear equation? ›
To graph an equation using the slope and y-intercept, 1) Write the equation in the form y = mx + b to find the slope m and the y-intercept (0, b). 2) Next, plot the y-intercept. 3) From the y-intercept, move up or down and left or right, depending on whether the slope is positive or negative.
What type of equation would produce a linear graph? ›
A linear equation can be written in the form y = mx + c where m is the gradient and c is the y intercept. Both m and c should be readily available from the graph. Alternatively you could use (y - k) = m(x - h) where m is again the gradient and (h, k) is any point on the line.
