NTC CHAMPS: Altamont wins in boys events; St. Anthony takes home the girls title at National Trail Conference Meet (2024)

ALTAMONT — The screams echoed across the track at Altamont Junior High School.

For the first time since 2021, the Indians won the National Trail Conference Boys Track and Field Meet. Altamont finished with 179 points, defeating St. Anthony, who had 137 points.

"It's hard to describe it," head coach Trenton Deadmond said. "We're just blessed with such good athletes. These guys have really started to gel as a team and we have a really good culture going. These guys are rooting for each other and cheering each other (on) and trying to just do everything they can to win. Most of the time, we try to do our best meet to meet, but this is one of those meets where you want to try and win it. You try to put everyone in a place to try and do that and I feel like we did that."

Senior sprinter Logan Duncan added, "It means a lot. This is the first time we've won NTC since 2021. That year, I was a freshman and we put together a really good team. Ever since then, this program has been on an incline. This team has become such a family over the years. I remember, my freshman year, we had 12 guys and now we're almost up to 30. I'm speechless."

Duncan won two individual races and was a part of the 4x100-meter relay team that captured a victory.

He won the 100 in 11.67 seconds and set a season record in the 200 at 23.54 seconds. The 4x100 team won in 45.86 seconds.

"Since seventh grade, I've been helping him with his blocks and it's come to fruition now as a senior," said Deadmond of Duncan. "For him to go and get first in the 100 and the 200 and in the 4x100 and to be here and be a part of this, it's just huge for him as a senior; he's worked hard for it."

Junior Ben Roedl won the 110-meter hurdles with a 16.52-second personal record. Junior Hayden Summers won the 300-meter hurdles at 44.55 seconds.

Altamont also won the 4x200-meter relay at 1:36.59 and the 4x400, the closing event of the meet, at 3:42.98.

"At the end of the day, it comes down to having trust in your teammates to believe in their ability to be able to run fast," said Summers, who ran the last leg in the 4x400. "Whenever you see you're ahead in that race, or they have a little bit of a lead, you just got to want it more than the next person."

In field events, sophom*ore Brock Wendling won the shot put with a personal best throw of 44 feet, 2.75 inches. Roedl won the high jump at six feet, the long jump at 20 feet, 5.75 inches and the triple jump at 42 feet, 6.25 inches. Sophom*ore Jacob Veteto won the pole vault at 13 feet, 2 inches.

As for girls events, Altamont finished third with 77 points.

"We showed up huge today, with limited numbers, too," Deadmond said. "We had a couple of softball girls, so they came and competed before the meet even started and got some big points for us."

"These girls come out every single day and they work," head girls track and field coach Johanna Hooks added. "They know what they need to do to get faster and get better. They're never satisfied with mediocre. They want outstanding every single time."

North Clay finished second with 88 points and St. Anthony won with 170 points.

Freshman Aubrey Denning won the 800 with a 2:16.41 personal record. Freshman Isabella Keller was first in the 1600 with a 4:51.77 personal record. Keller's 1600 team is the fastest among 1A competitors in the state, second in the state overall and 55th in the country.

Sophom*ore Liv Hoene won the 100-meter- and 300-meter hurdles. She finished in 17.42 seconds in the 100 and 48.24 seconds in the 300.

St. Anthony's 4x400 team of Audrey LaSarge, Hoene, Keller and Denning won in 4:17.60. The 4x800 team of Emma Helmink, Nora Trupiano, Gracie Slifer and Stacie Vonderheide won in 11:36.50.
