Look at that. Really? How are we supposed to know that the slapee was angsting, and the slapper snapped him out of it?

I disagree. There was clearly drama going on, what with the girl's face-in-hands pose and the trashed state of the room. It's obvious the guy just got slapped, and the slapper's pose seems calm while the slappee looks stunned. For a single still image it captures the trope quite well.

From what I see, having watched about... four minutes of Gundam in my life, and possibly recognizing the suits, this is just a pic of the former Trope Namer. The girl could be crying because a strange man just barged into the room and pimp-slapped her boyfriend, for all I know. It does not demonstrate the trope at all. Have a look.

  • The Hero... grows increasingly hysterical,
    • Don't see that
  • Jerkass,
    • Or that
  • unresponsive
    • or that
  • or (w)angsty,
    • nope
  • [a person] jolts him back to his senses
    • open to interpretation.
  • with a sharp slap
    • not shown; only the aftermath.

There is literally no part of the description shown.

I too have seen about 4 minutes of Gundam in my life, yet I can see the trope in this pic. As Joie De Combat said, there clearly was drama in that room, being trashed and all, and by seeing the backhand position of the slapper and the slappee holding his cheek, you can guess there was a slap. The slappee having this clear look of disbelief in his eyes also conveys the fact he looks like a Jerkass who got his first slap in his life.

We can probably do better, but we'll have to see some suggestions.

The drama could have been that a random dude barged into a room and slapped someone.

The slappee having this clear look of disbelief in his eyes also conveys the fact he looks like a Jerkass who got his first slap in his life.

Again, the look of disbelief could be from a random dude barging into his room and slapping him.

I really don't have a problem with the pic either.

I see no problem with the present image, one must be reading too much into things (or not reading at all) to think the actual image and caption might represent other situations other than faithfully represent the trope. There's no need to even know Gundam to understand the situation.

I see:

A man with his hand outstretched.

Another man holding his face.

A woman in the corner crying.

I can logically conclude that the man on the floor has been hit by the man that is standing.

I cannot logically conclude anything else about the situation.

I agree with the OP, the image seems to focus too much on the slapper amd the crying girl, instead of the supposedly wangsty hero. It does not convey anything that the trope suggests. If I only looked at the image without reading the article, I would probably think something along "a father walked into a guy making out with his daughter and got a little bit angry".

I think the current image works fine. I haven't seen any of that anime and I got it right away.

Let's say that I'm just too ignorant to see what's going on here. Enlighten me. How does this image, beyond a shadow of a doubt, show the trope as it is described?

The problem is, while there was "obviously drama in that room," as other posters have said, the trope calls for a very specific type of drama (angsting), and I don't see how you can derive that specific type in this picture. I frankly thought there'd been a physical fight going on.

I didn't find that issue to be a dealbreaker.

I can tell someone hysterical just got slapped. That's a start. No idea why — had to read the article to get the rest of the trope. Once I got the idea I didn't feel mislead by the page image. I agree it doesn't show all aspects of the trope, but showing it's the hero who is losing it during a crisis is gonna be tricky.

Speaking from experience, when trying to convince people that a serviceable but flawed image needs to be changed it's a good idea to have a better image to hand.

I got it as well. Even if you don't see the slap, you see the effects of it. It's obvious that one of them was slapped by the other. I'll agree that you don't see the (w)angst but I don't think that's wholly necessary. I didn't even notice the room had been trashed. But if it ever goes down the suggestion route here's some Airplane! Not even a slap, barely a caption.: Get A Hold Of Yourself Man (19).

The best image, if anyone can find one, would be a panel from a comicbook or manga of a character slapping someone while saying "Get a Hold of Yourself", or something similar. It would clearly show the slap in action. No particular examples I can think of, by I'm sure someone must able to think of one. As the current image stands, I don't think it's perfect, but it's clear enough. You can see how it would relate to the trope, so it's not terrible.

I didn't even know this picture was from Gundam when I first saw it, but it always seemed pretty clear to me what was going on. Heck, usually the first thing I thought of when thinking about this trope was the image. I honestly don't know if we're going to be able to find a better picture.

Current project: Cleaning up the Chrono Crusade examples one at a time. God help me.

I can tell someone hysterical just got slapped.

Wow, I couldn't tell that myself.

There are also just too many distracting factors: the obviously torn-apart room, the sobbing girl. Maybe a crop...?

@OP: You could probably argue that for any picture of one person slapping another. I'm not saying we couldn't find a better one, though. It does look a bit awkward.

Not even a slap, barely a caption.: Get A Hold Of Yourself Man (26) Good, but I think we want a guy-on-guy pic; that one may have Unfortunate Implications.

-Face Palm-

Let me state my point again: This trope can be summed up in 3 parts:

  • 1: Character A is angsting/being a prick/being overly emotional somehow.
  • 2: Character B slaps Character A.
  • 3: The intent of Character B's slap is to "cure" Character A of his emotional anxiety/prickishness/angst.

The current issue I have is that the image simply suggests #2 It doesn't show the other 2 points with any certainty. It could easily be a cap from a scene where a lunatic barged into some other guy's room and smacked him for no good reason.

Or he was trying to assault the girl in her room, hence the crying. Not to mention there's a bed present.

1: It's a bedroom. There will be a bed there.2: As said above, the girl could be crying because a crazed lunatic just barged in and slapped her man.
